A few pointers for starters:
- do not develop a practice of low rates and underbidding to break into the business -
but find your own unique selling points and experience to offer unique and sought after services and specialist fields
- always deliver on time
- always check the payment practices of your clients (especially with rush jobs)
- hire or work with a more experienced translator to proofread your translations
- only take jobs that in fields that you know something about
- tell everybody you know : you are now a freelancer and you are looking for work
- to gain extra experience you might want to work in a translation agency or do some pro bono work for good causes...
